Supplement Unit Converter

Labels mix micrograms, milligrams and international units, and IU means something different for every vitamin. Enter an amount to convert it, including the official IU factors for vitamins A, D and E.

Metric conversions are exact: 1 gram is 1000 milligrams and 1 milligram is 1000 micrograms. IU factors are the official ones: 1 IU of vitamin D equals 0.025 mcg, 1 IU of retinol equals 0.3 mcg RAE, 1 IU of natural vitamin E equals 0.67 mg and 1 IU of synthetic vitamin E equals 0.45 mg. IU is meaningless without knowing which nutrient it describes.

Reference

The B Vitamins, to Scale

B vitamins get grouped together on labels as though they were interchangeable, but their reference amounts differ by more than tenfold.

Bar chart of FDA Daily Values for B vitamins: niacin 16 mg, pantothenic acid 5 mg, vitamin B6 1.7 mg, riboflavin 1.3 mg, thiamin 1.2 mg
FDA Daily Values for the B vitamins, shown to scale in milligrams.

Daily Values are the FDA labelling reference for adults and children 4 years and older. B12 and folate are omitted here because they are measured in micrograms and would not be visible at this scale.
